JOURNEY TO REFUGE…IS THE PIECE ITSELF
OR…THE ART OF CLAIMING ONE’S STATE
OF BEING AND BECOMING INTO MANY THINGS
CNS team: M.Abel, Bri Bird, K-Chemical
PART 1. LIVE REPORT ON 5.11.2013:
After working for a month in this project, on May 11th the Counter Narrative Society presented the first report of Journey to Refuge to the public. This was an informal performance that captures what we hope to include in the CP-LAB’s final printed report and use for a creative lecture/powerpoint thing for the near future.
Hosted by Taller Puertorriqueño - Visual Arts Program.
PART 2. OVERVIEW OF THE IN-TANGIBLE THINGS WE ARE USING, CARRYING AND FIGURING OUT AT THIS VERY MOMENT
The questions, the tools, the weight, the fights, the (unfinished) dreams
Observing? – The ways neighborhoods have been affected by the invisible punishing machine, (CNS’ “science-fictional” way of defining the prison industrial complex and the insidious effect of mass incarceration on society) and documenting our anti-prison activism in analytical performative writing, photographs and other media.
Feeling? – The many ways people have been affected. Just in the last places we have been visiting in North Kensignton and Fair Hill at least one other person knows of someone who has been incarcerated or has been the subject of some form of sanction by the state.
Learning? – We are learning that our processes of self-realization, self-actualization and self-organization are also often time processes of interdependence between the psychological, sociological and physical environment. Go figure what we mean by all of these. Here, we are tripping!
Searching? – We are digging for local data but it is outdated or often time too broad. Then while in some ways we are clueless in where to dig deeper through the information banks, we are just out and about like in the old days. Just meeting and talking to people.
6.3.13 – Biking around with a 30 years old bike.
5.10.13 – mmm… The bike has seen better days! – The front wheel is gone and part of the frame was smashed. Now we are walking and riding the bus and on friend’s cars a lot for the next week. We are getting another one next week.
5.8.13 – We have been biking way to much, our bike is breaking down. So, now we are using the bus but it is expensive. To ride the bus both ways is $4, if I have to transfer is $3 each way. If I buy tokens, I save some cash… but still…
Doing? – We are meeting people.
Organizing? – So far we are organizing several working groups, few presentations and TBA public ones. Here is the list of places we are working with:
Living? – YES!
Meeting? – Oh… a lot… specially with individuals and these groups…

Planning? – That too.
Thinking? – More than what you want to know at the moment, but if you would like to hear what we have to say, get in touch with us.
Listening? – YES. This is importantisimo!
Mapping? – yep… it is our obsession.
Sharing? – This too. We are sharing stories, skills, information, jokes, sad and happy moments.
Finding? – Some statistics… about the areas (zip codes) we are concentrating our creative radical energy in Philadelphia… because…
…these areas have been impacted for some time by historical state repression / the PIC
